KUCHING: The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and SEGi College Sarawak have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to spearhead the college’s accountancy and finance programmes to prepare students for the accountancy and finance fields.

The MoA was signed by head of ACCA Malaysia David Chin and principal of SEGi College Sarawak Ivy Lau in a simple ceremony at the college’s premises yesterday.

Lau said students would benefit from gaining an additional diploma certification from ACCA or be on an accelerated programme to obtain the ACCA professional qualification.

“Students of SEGi College Sarawak’s Diploma in Accountancy can have two fundamental ACCA papers exempted and upon completion of the Diploma programme, receive a Diploma in Accounting and Business certificate from ACCA when they pass the third fundamental ACCA paper,” she said.

The accelerated programme, she added, was applicable for SEGi College Sarawak students under its Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting and Finance programme.

“The 3+0 degree programme is an external programme from University of Sunderland, United Kingdom and its graduates are entitled to 9 ACCA fundamental papers exemptions, which means they only need to complete the remaining five professional ACCA papers in order to become ACCA affiliates.”

Under the agreement of this accelerated programme, the undergraduate students can also be on the pathway to ACCA affiliates by taking up five professional papers from Year 2.

The academic team in SEGi would prepare and coach students to complete the remaining five professional papers.

This new incentives stirred up excitement among students and some expressed their eagerness to register for the professional papers.

In addition, the initial registration fee and annual subscription fee for students in this accelerated programme will be waived by ACCA during their studies and the first two years after graduation.

Graduates will only start to pay for their ACCA annual fee in the fifth year which provides them access to ACCA’s online resources for studying and training.

Part of the agreement between ACCA and SEGi College Sarawak, included support from ACCA for a more industry-based education for students and preparing them to be career-ready upon graduation.

“The partnership with ACCA is not only about adding value to the existing accountancy programmes but to increase student exposure to the accounting and finance industry where students can obtain first-hand information on the industry,” he said.

Students of SEGi College Sarawak benefit not only from its 33 years of experience and strong track record, but gain from the global synergy and resources University of Sunderland provides.
