MICRO-CREDENTIALS (MCs), or digital certifications of assessed knowledge, skills and competencies which can be a component of an accredited programme or standalone courses, are among the latest advancements in education.
Similar to gaming, where a player who completes a task is given a digital badge to acknowledge the achievement, MCs award a badge that will become part of the learner’s digital file when a specific skill is mastered. Each MC digital badge is evidence that the learners have mastered specific professional skills. These badges can be added to their digital files as academic accomplishments.
The MC badges can be verified by the issuing institution, ensuring a recognised certificate.
This pathway can offer lower-cost options to acquire the required knowledge, skills and competencies, allowing the learners to enter the employment market sooner, SEGi University & Colleges said in a press release.
Dubbed an “academic buffet” by the education group, MCs “break down” Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) accredited programmes into bite-sized modules.
“Introduced to support lifelong learning, MCs provide opportunities to access higher education programmes and recognition in the form of credits for individuals who have acquired non-formal and informal learning throughout their work and life experiences.

Learners can study at their own pace as MC courses can be completed faster than regular programmes and are significantly more affordable than a full-fledged diploma, bachelor or master’s degree.
