2014 Annual Report
Messages from Key Management

Hew Moi Lan
Group Chief Executive Officer
SEG International Bhd

The past year at SEGi was one akin to a rollercoaster ride. Just like life itself, the SEGi journey was one full of ups and downs. We faced stiff competition within the education sector, but what tried to bring us down only made us stronger and better!

As a result we have invested much time and effort in improving our game and making ourselves more resilient to challenges in the sector. This includes synergizing resources and talents to end 2014 with greater success.

The greatest joy is when we received accolades from consumer brand award groups as endorsements that we are on the right track to excellence. SEGi won a second Gold trophy at the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Awards 2014 and Silver at the Putra Brand Awards 2014, making it our fourth time to be recognised by this premier brand awards committee. We were also awarded with the Outstanding Innovation Award by the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) at its inaugural MRCA Crown Awards. It was a great honour for us to receive the Brand Excellence Award 2014 – 2015 in the Education category at the World Branding Awards in London, United Kingdom, which put us in the same category as University of Oxford, along with other world-renown consumer names such as Apple, Google, Coca-Cola, Mercedes-Benz and Nestlé.

The past year saw 27,000 students in our campuses in Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Sarawak being groomed to be future leaders, by enabling them to discover and utilise their talents. New building extensions, revamped interiors and new infrastructures have helped make the campuses a livelier and conducive place, not only as a place of study for these young adults, but also to inspire them in this journey of self-discovery.

SEGi also welcomed experienced and talented people to be part of its Academic and Management team to steer SEGi to greater heights.

To increase the significance of both our university and college campuses, we are now known collectively as SEGi University and Colleges. We are extremely proud to own the University status granted by the Ministry of Education in 2012, thus enabling us to operate and grant one of the widest ranges of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes among Malaysian private universities. Our colleges in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Penang and Sarawak continue to offer premier pre-university education and also qualifications from our partner universities from the United Kingdom, United States and Australia.

I am looking forward to the year 2015 to see SEGi continue its winning streak and working with the wonderful team of SEGians to break boundaries and bring positive changes to the Malaysian education sector.

Emeritus Professor Dr. Muhamad Awang
SEGi University Vice Chancellor

Another year has passed and it means 12 months of witnessing exciting milestones for SEGi. It is incredible what SEGi has achieved, thanks to our stellar employees and students who are proud to be part of the SEGian family.

SEGi was ranked on par with the best Malaysian universities in the year 2013 for the Rating for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia (SETARA ‘13) exercise. SETARA ‘13 measures the quality of teaching and learning at level six (undergraduate level) of the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). It is a continuation of the 2011 Rating System for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia (SETARA ‘11) and the results were released
in November 2014. SEGi was ranked in Tier 5 as “Excellent”.

As a leading education institution, SEGi continues to develop innovative programmes to cater to the needs of the industry and ultimately, the community at large. One notable project we are currently embarking on is the establishment of the Confucius Institute, a non-profit educational organisation that provides Chinese language lessons, promotes Chinese language and culture, and facilitates educational and cultural exchanges. The Confucius Institute is a largely sought-after programme in many elite universities in the world, and SEGi is the first private university in Malaysia to establish the Confucius Institute in partnership with Hainan Normal University to ensure the success of the programme and it should be in operation this year.

We have continued to attract international university partners to offer broader programme options to students. Now our students have the option to transfer to premier universities such as Cardiff University, Queen’s University Belfast and Swansea University in the United Kingdom, Auckland University of Technology in New Kingdom and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. 2+1 options are also available for selected programmes with Abertay University in the United Kingdom. We have just entered a new partnership with Troy University from the United States of America to provide quality 4+0 American education to students.

A special programme for high achieving final year students called the SEGi Talent Enhancement Programme (STEP) was launched to provide them with an edge upon graduation. Upon completion of the STEP programme, graduates are ready to be outstanding employees at the workplace, equipped with relevant training and experience similar to a management training programme.

SEGi remains committed to strive for excellence and to ensure quality education is within everyone’s reach. Together, we will be able to achieve just that.
