[The Star] Get a P.A.S.S at SEGi

Education for all: SEGi is looking to assist students and their families struggling with the financial strain brought on by the pandemic.

THE Covid-19 pandemic has taken away the normality of many families’ financial capacity.

In an effort to help students and families recover from the upheaval, SEGi University has created a new scholarship initiative called the Pandemic Assistance Scholarship Scheme (P.A.S.S).

P.A.S.S aims to alleviate financial pressures resulting from job losses and shrinking incomes to enable deserving students to focus on their studies and graduate with a qualification so that they can give back to society, SEGi said in a press release.

The institution will also assist students affected by the pandemic with tuition, room and board, and other educational expenses to ensure that quality education continues despite the devastating effects on jobs and incomes across the nation.

“Education is a fundamental human right that is the key to national development.

“While parents’ contributions had previously outpaced scholarships as students’ main education funding source, the current economic challenges are forcing families to be creative about their education payment options.

“SEGi recognises that every student’s situation is unique. The transition to tertiary education involves a high cost, more than what some can afford.

“Generous support from the institution is expected to empower students in need to proceed with their education amid the economic challenges brought on by Covid-19,” the statement read.

Mindful of underprivileged students suffering from anxiety, delaying their studies and dropping out, SEGi is investing in the Covid-19 generation to prevent the nation from losing its greatest asset.

“Many students have lost their support networks during the lockdown.

“SEGi University has a moral responsibility to help students have access to quality education and find their purpose in life.

“Changes in a family’s financial situation do not have to mean putting one’s tertiary education on hold. Together, we will make the best of the situation. This pandemic will soon be in the past.”
