[Malaysiakini] Big round of applause for SEGi Sibu Clinical Campus

With our country’s vaccination programme picking up its pace, SEGi does not want to miss the opportunity to ensure that Malaysia achieves its target herd immunity by December. Since June 2021, SEGi’s Clinical Campus in Sibu, Sarawak has joined the bandwagon by registering more than a hundred volunteers comprising the Dean, students, adjunct lecturers & lecturers, and operation staff to support the national agenda. SEGi Health Care was officially registered as a Health Care Organisation Provider (HCO), the Pusat Pemberian Vaksin Industri (PPVIN). The PPVIN was operated in collaboration with University Technology Sarawak Campus and PANSAR, a local conglomerate. To-date, Sibu has more than 23,000 vaccinated recipients and almost 50,00 dosages were administered.

“Our team’s approach in getting people vaccinated is client-centric. Our tag line “If you don’t’ come to us we will go to you. This is reflected in the range of venues used by the team to administer the vaccines. This includes travelling more than 7 hours out of Sibu to reach the people. Vaccines were administered both in buildings with roof and walls, with roof no walls and open spaces by the roadside”, said the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Dr. Mohamad Raili bin Suhaili.

“The team even made home visits for those who had problems in getting out of the house. Having a team of committed and dedicated staff, volunteers and students have made all these possible”, he further added.

Based on the latest statistics by the COVID-19 Vaccine Supply Assurance Special Committee (JKJAV), Sarawak has the second-highest vaccinated population in Malaysia, and this is a significant milestone despite more than 40% of its population residing in distant rural villages. This is possible due to the concerted effort by various parties including volunteers who are well-trained and have devoted long hours to provide efficient community-level assistance in the Call Centre at Lanang Health Clinic, Sibu.

SEGi believes that it is important to train their students on crisis preparedness and intervention so that when duty calls, they are ready to answer. The involvement of SEGi Sibu Clinical Campus in the Program Immunisasi Covid Kebangsaan (PICK) is a responsibility in the public service that SEGi is honoured to fulfil to expedite the vaccination rate nationwide. The medical students gained a lot of practical experience in various aspects of the vaccination programme.

“One of the things that impacted me the most was the teamwork between my colleagues. We needed to get people vaccinated, in urban and remote rural areas. Although the journey was tough, was worth the experience”, said a year 5 SEGi student volunteer, Ms Cherry Tham.

While many premises currently allow entry only to those who are fully vaccinated, SEGi urges all public members to register and obtain their COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible to make Malaysia a safer place.
