[The Star] SEGi dares students to dream

IN the past year, the nation has witnessed a substantial economic downturn in multiple sectors as an inevitable surge in the use of digital technologies took place due to social distancing norms and nationwide lockdowns.

Increasing digitalisation has posed a new challenge in preparing students for tomorrow’s workforce.

Looking past the traditional understanding of “employability”, which places too much emphasis on an institution’s ability to get graduates into employment that matches their disciplines rather than on their readiness for a career, SEGi University is scaling up its academic programmes to ensure that students are ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Academic programmes, the varsity said, must reflect students’ willingness to stretch themselves.

“The academic experience has gone remote. Organic in-person conversations between classmates and faculty members are replaced by communication through a screen.

“And financial struggles suffered by parents and families are starting to take a toll on students who are at the start of their tertiary academic journey.

“But we are here to help. Through the Dare to Dream (D2D) initiative, enrolled diploma students are guaranteed admissions to a wide range of pathway options into bachelor’s degrees.

“Understanding the financial constraints that are constantly accompanying a lot of decision-making processes, SEGi allows students to pursue their studies with no upfront payment until they get their first jobs upon graduating,” a statement from the varsity read.

The D2D initiative, coupled with the integration of vocation and employment-oriented goals into the education pedagogy and collaborations with industry partners, seeks to prepare a highly-skilled workforce that can drive the nation’s economic competitiveness in responding to rapid digital changes and increasing global demands.

“While the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has spared no one, SEGi University challenges students to dream big and develop a positive mindset to improve their academic performance. “Distance learning is not new to SEGi University and our students are able to adjust quickly to a hybrid pedagogy. None of us can predict what will happen after the pandemic but if your concern is job security after graduation, trust that we will future-proof you for tomorrow’s workforce,” the varsity said.
